Energy and Commerce Committee Holds Hearing on Physician Payment Formula
5/5/2004
The House Energy and Commerce Committee began the process of examining the problems with the Medicare physician payment system by holding a hearing on May 5 that specifically looked at problems with the current formula used for updating physician payments annually. The Government Accounting Office, the Congressional Budget Office, and the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission testified. The Alliance of Specialty Medicine welcomes discussion on this issue and hopes it will draw out the problems with the current formula and reinforce the need for Congress to develop more permanent solutions. Unless changes are made to the formula, physicians are scheduled to receive cuts of 5 percent per year from 2006 to 2012. Additional hearings are anticipated this summer.
