Lawmakers Urge CMS to Take Action
6/1/2004
Both Democrat and Republican Senators and Representatives have recently sent letters to Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Mark B. McClellan urging the agency to take action to prevent cuts in physician payment. Current estimates predict physician reimbursement will be cut about 30 percent by 2013. In the letters, lawmakers urge Dr. McClellan to take adminstrative actions to: include the cost of newly added benefits, including those added by the Prescription Drug law, into expenditure targets; take Part B covered drugs and "incident to" services out of the pool of physician services; and reevaluate the number of Medicare beneficiaries predicted to enroll in private plans. The Alliance meet with Dr. McClellan on June 10 to discuss these, and other, issues.
